BioSystems Engineering Laboratory (BSEL) has been the hub group of Advanced Biomass R&D Center (ABC) since Prof. Yong K. Chang was appointed the director of ABC (https://www.biomass.re.kr) in 2015. It is a key research center supported by the Korean government in the area of microalgae-based biorefinery, that is, production of fuels and chemicals from microalgal biomass. Research scope at ABC encompasses a variety of topics such as microalgal strain development, microalgal cultivation, cell harvesting, lipid extraction, and lipid conversion to biodiesel and bio-jet fuel. Various bioconversion/chemical processes for the production of co-products from byproduct glycerol and lipid-extracted algal biomass are also under development at ABC.
Before becoming the hub laboratory of ABC, BSEL’s main research focus used be on bioprocessing technologies in general such as fermentation process development, bioreactor design and control, and bioseparation.
